Migration numbers at record high

THE number of permanent and long-term migrants arriving in Australia has soared to more than 500,000 a year.

The Study in Australia (SIA) Vocation Education and Training Showcase Philippines 2010 is an Austrade-organised Exhibition and Mission designed to assist Australian Colleges and Training Institutions tap into the high-growth Philippine market for VET.

This two-day event will feature an Exhibition, SIA Seminars, and business matching sessions with potential Agents and training Partners in Manila. An optional Exhibition in Clark Field in Central Luzon is also available to participants who would like to explore opportunities in this region. It is the second largest market for local vocational education and is a major hub for provinces north of Manila.

Student Visa Living Costs and Evidence of Funds

The Migration Regulations require international students to show evidence of funds to contribute to the cost of living and studying in Australia. This helps to ensure students are better able to make the most of their studies and have a safe and enjoyable experience in Australia.

While international students are able to supplement their income with money earned through part-time work in Australia, the ‘living costs’ requirement helps to support the success of students in their studies by ensuring that they do not to rely on such work to meet all their expenses.

They are the new face of shop-front entrepreneurship: Asian Australians are a growing business band, and they're not just running noodle shops and restaurants.

Instead, they are buying milk bars, takeaways, newsagencies and Lotto outlets. They are running post offices, dry-cleaners, fruit and vegie shops, mini-marts. They are behind the counter in bakeries, video stores, fish and chip shops, cafes and coffee lounges. They own and operate: they run franchises.

The latest Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) International Trade in Services data1 shows international education activity contributed $17.2 billion in export income to the Australian economy in 2008-09, up 23.2 per cent from the previous financial year.
