Aussie Program recognizes Pinoy Professional Qualifications
It’s a challenge for Filipino professionals to have their qualifications recognized in Australia, but the 457 visa program makes it possible.
Like most Filipinos, Paolo Beringuel came to Australia to find a better job and pursue his career.
While he is now employed as a Design Engineer at Bullivants Pty Ltd, Beringuel went a step further by joining the search for the WA Young Professional Engineer of the year.
First when I came here, sinabihan ako ng boss ko na magpa-recognize ka doon sa Institution of Engineers Australia. Dahil dapat pasok ka sa Australian standards, Beringuel said.
It’s difficult to get an Australian equivalent for most overseas qualifications. Either you do further studies or you do the whole course again.
The introduction of the 457 visa program has made it possible for these overseas qualifications to be recognized in Australia.
I have to present three career episodes of my engineering life. Life as a student in Mapua, second is when I was an Equipment Engineer at Makati Development Corporation, and third is my role as a design engineer here in Bullivants, he said.
With the support of his boss, Beringuel sent in his name.
Naisip ko, it’s one way of proving na gone are the days na yong mga Pilipino nasa low level or low category lang as workers. Gusto kong ipakita na merong isang Filipino mechanical engineer na nasa ganitong industry, he said.
Beringuel didn’t win the title but he is proud to have been considered for his contribution to Australian design engineering.
Masaya pa rin ako kahit hindi ako iyong nanalo. Okay pa rin dahil alam ko na isa rin ako sa mga nominees. So being a nominee, maganda rin, it is already an achievement, masarap pa rin iyong pakiramdam ko, he added.
